Director’s Greeting

Daegu Waterworks was first proposed in 1906, and, starting with completion of the Gachang Old Water Purification Plant and Daebong No. 1 Service Reservoir in March 1918, the city has proactively responded to the expansion of its waterworks facilities, ensuring water quality, and supplying safe tap water to meet citizen demand and address changes in the water environment.

Following the 1991 phenol incident, we introduced state-of-the-art water purification facilities to provide the city with safer tap water, implemented the nation's highest level of water quality testing (320 raw water items and 330 purified water items) for strict management of water quality from raw water to tap, and established a smart water supply management system utilizing ICT to monitor the entire process, from incident prevention to response.

In addition, we continue to pursue projects to improve the drinking water environment and provide people with healing spaces through support for the replacement costs of aging water pipes in homes, fully covering the costs of removing rooftop water tanks, implementing a mobile tap water safety verification program, opening reservoirs, and supplying water flow to the Sincheon Ecological Stream.

Furthermore, we are striving to become a leading city in the water industry, supporting joint growth and overseas expansion with water companies, including providing on-site water supply test beds, developing new technologies, signing technology agreements, and applying for joint patents through cooperation with local water companies.

Accordingly, in 2000, we were the first in the nation’s water supply sector to obtain ISO 14001 international certification, and in 2020, we obtained KOLAS (Korea Laboratory Accreditation Scheme) accreditation. In 2023, we obtained ISO 22000, an international certification for tap water management as a safe food product, and ISO 45001, an international certification in the field of occupational health and safety.

Daegu was selected as the best analysis institution in the ERA (Environmental Resources Associates) International Proficiency Test for six consecutive years from 2020 to 2025, and of particular note, the city was also selected as the world's first pilot city for the "UNESCO Urban Water Management Excellence Certification," affirming the excellence of Daegu's tap water.

All these achievements were made possible by the years of unwavering support from our residents. Moving forward, every employee of the Waterworks Headquarters pledge to do our utmost to provide the best tap water and water services that enhance the quality of life for our citizens, 365 days a year.
